Challenge

Johnson Co. R-VII found themselves in a common situation with excessive energy costs. The majority of their windows had broken thermal seals and needed to be replaced. There was no temperature control system to reduce energy usage, and the lighting system was very inefficient and did not provide adequate light levels for effective learning. The board had worked with another company for some time without any satisfactory results. Clearly an answer had to be found to reduce energy costs. The district then turned to CTS for analysis and recommendations.

Project Overview

CTS was able to develop a project to drastically reduce the district’s energy consumption, and which was affordable. CTS worked with the Department of Natural Resources for the project’s funding. The project’s scope addressed and corrected the problems with:

  • Complete lighting retrofit of the Sr. High Building with high efficiency lighting. This includes state of the art highbay fluorescent technology with occupancy sensors in the gymnasium.
  • Replacement of all windows with broken thermal seals.
  • Installation of new thermally broken entryways with sidelights and transoms.
  • Engineering and installation of new networked programmable thermostats on all new and existing furnaces. The thermostats provide an open protocol system that is able to be accessed through any PC in the district that has access to the Web. The district is now able to monitor the entire building from a single point, which will provide a central point for scheduling.

Through implementation of the recommendations of CTS, the district will save over $15,800 each year in energy costs.

Project Results

“CTS developed, implemented, and successfully completed a project that will provide the district high-energy savings for many years. The quality of work and effort throughout the project was exceptional. The quality of work and effort throughout the project was exceptional.Although moving to another district, I will strongly consider CTS for future projects and highly recommend them to other administrators. Their commitment and expertise can benefit both large and small districts with a variety of project. Needless to say, our experience with CTS was extremely positive.”
