Challenge

The district was faced with HVAC systems that were in severe need of retrofit. The necessity of closing facilities was a real possibility if answers to the situation could not be found and funded. The inefficient HVAC and lighting systems were plaguing the district with high energy costs as well. Students and staff were trying to function in unacceptable conditions. Solutions were desperately needed.

Project Overview

CTS was able to develop a project that would save the district $120,000 annually in energy costs and $226,000 in operational costs. By implementing such a program the district was in a financial position to make the necessary improvements and keep their schools operational. The project was completed on an extremely tight time frame with minimal interruptions to the educational environment.

Improvements included HVAC system renovation and the addition of air conditioning to areas that were previously without; district-wide replacement of lighting system with energy efficient T-8 technology; network of all mechanical systems through a district-wide building automation system for access, control and troubleshooting; addition of make-up air units for kitchen areas.

During this phase the district contracted with CTS for interior renovation work at the High School and a second phase for upgrading a newly acquired facility.

Project Results

“The district’s heating and cooling equipment was very old resulting in frequent breakdowns and poor performance. It was difficult in some cases to find replacement parts. It was apparent that the equipment malfunctions and resulting student and staff discomfort were increasing and we were facing possible school closures unless corrective actions were taken. CTS responded to our RFP with the most comprehensive guaranteed energy savings proposal. The project has been a success and the CTS staff assigned to the project had the necessary skills and attitude for successful performance. I would certainly recommend that districts look to this type of project as an option for addressing their needs for improvements. CTS has proven themselves to be a most acceptable construction management firm in the St. Louis market.”
