Challenge

The district had repeatedly tried to pass bond issues to address space needs and the renovation of existing buildings, some of which were over 50 years old and in dire need of infrastructure improvements. The bond issues failed and the renovations were often blamed for the loss. The district was finally able to pass a tax levy increase which resulted in available funding for a performance contract for the much needed renovations. The outdated and inefficient systems within the buildings provided the opportunity for substantial energy savings and improvement of the learning environment for the students.

Project Overview

The district’s heating and cooling needs were best met with the installation of a 115 vertical well closed loop geothermal heat pump system. This technology utilizes the earth’s natural thermal energy, a renewable resource, to heat or cool the buildings. The installation of the automation temperature control system will further increase the HVAC energy savings for the district.

  • Install new geothermal heat pump heating and cooling system
  • Install building automation temperature control system
  • Upgrade main electrical service to supply new HVAC systems
  • Replace over 3100 existing lights with a new energy efficient lighting system
  • Install new acoustical ceiling systems
  • Replace existing window systems with thermal window systems
  • Replace exterior doors with thermal door systems
  • Remove asbestos floor tile/replace with new VCT tile
  • Remove existing interior doors and replace with fire rated door systems
  • Multipurpose room retrofitted into library, classrooms and teachers’ lounge areas
  • Install new safety fire detection systems
  • Install new safety communications systems

Project Results

First Year Energy Audit Reported Savings of $71,127 (115.47% of guaranteed amount)

“The buildings were as old as 50 years and needed some significant work. My familiarity with the (performance contract) process made it an easy decision. I opened the process up for bids even though I had worked successfully with CTS in a previous district. After the bid process was complete, CTS was not only the best package, but the least expensive. I am extremely satisfied working with CTS. This is my second district and second contract with CTS and they have been easy to work with. They tell you what they will do and then they do just what they told you. I recommend CTS to everyone.”
